About Me

Hi! My name is Denise Owens and I am an Early Literacy Specialist in Greenville, NC. I have devoted my teaching career to promoting literacy, especially with emergent, early and struggling readers. I began my career teaching third graders followed by 7 years as a Reading Recovery Teacher/Literacy Teacher and then 4 years as a RR Teacher Leader. For the past 3 years, I have worked with K-2 students to promote a sound literacy foundation and will continue in that role this year.

As a literacy specialist, I also provide professional development to colleagues at the school and district level. In addition, I work with beginning teachers as well as future teachers to help build an understanding of the reading and writing processes and the reciprocity that exists between the two. I am also fortunate to be a part of, and current president for, a local reading council called the Tar River Reading Council. Our council is an affiliate of the NC Reading Association and the International Literacy Association.

SIMON getting in on some reading!

On a personal note, I do not have children of my own, though I consider my students to be like my children as well as my two sweet kitties Abby and Simon. I LOVE animals and hope to one day own an animal rescue. During my free time, I enjoy traveling, spending time with family and friends, and of course...reading!
